FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FAQ

Indus Solvent Cements
Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

1.Q: Why are THF-free solvent cements becoming popular
A.THF has been listed since long as a possible carcinogen ( cancer causing product). Hence many customers desire a THF-free solvent cement . Indus is one of the very few manufacturers in the world which makes THF-free solvent cement with the same performance.
2.Q- Does the 3in 1 solvent cement spray meet normal performance standards
A Yes the Indus solvent spray cement works on CPVC , UPVC & PVC pipes upto 11/4"(32mm) . It meets the hydrostatic burst tests and makes equally strong joints vs normal solvent cements. It is also very easy to use & fast setting
3.Q What is the shelf life of the cement and primers?
A All solvent cements & primers have 2 year shelf life from date of manufacture under normal storage conditions as given on the can
4.Q Where can I find the manufacturing date & batch codes on can?
A The dates & batch codes on all solvent cements are located on the bottom of can.
5.Q Can I use PVC cement on CPVC pipe, or CPVC cement on PVC pipe?
A Indus provides different cements for various applications and you should always use PVC cements on PVC piping and CPVC cement on CPVC piping. However CPVC solvent can be used on PVC & UPVC  piping If needed. However PVC/UPVC solvent cements cannot be used on CPVC. PVC solvent cements cannot be used on UPVC or CPVC
6.Q How are cure times determined? A Cure times vary depending on a wide variety of factors.
These include temperate & humidity, pipe thickness and diameter etc. Please use
chart that is part of instructions available in the info center section  or contact our technical service department
7. What type of primer do I use on UPVC and CPVC pipe?
A All primers are safe for use on UPVC and CPVC pipe and fittings.
8.Q How many fittings can I join together with one can of cement?
A This depends on the can size and the diameter of pipe. Please refer our chart in the instructions document (available in Info Center)
9. Q Do I need to use primer on ABS?
A No. You should never use primer on ABS pipe because it will affect the integrity of the pipe.
10.Q What cement do you recommend when high ph & low ph chemicals are flowing through the lines?
A Please use our Industrial solvent cements . Use of primer is also highly recommended.
11.Q Can I use PVC cement to join ABS to PVC?
A No
12.Q Should I let primer dry before applying the cement?
A No. Apply solvent cement within two minutes after applying solvent cement.
13.Q When should primer be used?
A Ideally primer should be used for 4” pipe and above. However please consult your project heads for guidelines for your project
14.Q What is the definition of Low VOC?
A VOC means “Volatile Organic Compound”. Volatile describes a liquid that evaporates at room temperature and Organic is a compound that contains carbon. A low VOC level is considered at or below 150g/L (grams per liter.) All our CPVC & UPVC solvent cements confirm to Lo-VOC standards
15.Q What are the differences between regular, medium and heavy duty cements?
A These are defined by the diameter of pipe being joined. Additionally, there are differences in viscosity
16.Q Are there any solvent cements for High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), or PEX?
A No.
17.Q How do you separate a joint that has been cemented together and cured?
A. Once a joint is properly assembled it cannot be properly dis-assembled. The joint if properly assembled is stronger than the pipe itself
18.Q. what solvent can be used with natural gas
A Indus CPVC yellow medium cement code ICMY can be used in this application provided your local gas provider and government rules allow for the use of these products in this application.
19.Q. What product should I use for electrical conduit pipe
A. Use our standard PVC solvent cement
20.Q What is chamfering the pipe?
A Chamfering is the act of beveling the outside end of the pipe, which you will be inserting into the fitting. This keeps the cement from being pushed out of the fitting and causing a weak bond in the joint.
21.Q Can I use Indus solvent cements for lines which carry Deionized water?
A Yes.
22.Q What cement is used to bond flexible pipe and fittings?
A Indus “Wet” solvent cements can be used for this application.
23.Q How long do you allow CPVC pipe to cure before introducing fluids and or pressure?
A please see chart in instructions available in Info Center .You can use them to calculate the cure time for your specific application
Q Are Indus cements safe to use on water lines that carry drinking (potable) water?
A All Indus UPVC and CPVC solvent cements are certified to NSF/ ANSI 14 & 61and are safe to use on drinking (potable) water systems.
24.Q What is interference fit?
A Interference fit is the pre-assembly test you apply to the pipe and fitting. After pipe is chamfered you will dry fit the pipe into the fitting and you will want resistance between 1/3 and 1/2 way into the fitting. This will allow for a good bond when cement is applied. If there is no interference fit, you should not try to cement the pipe and fittings together.
25.Q What should be done with a plumbing system that was assembled using the wrong solvent cement, i.e., CPVC cement on PVC piping, PVC cement on CPVC piping or ABS on CPVC or PVC piping?
A even though it appears that a joint has been made, there is a high risk of failure. We recommend the joints be cut out and remade.
26.Q. Will the solvent cement last well till 2 years from mfg date, once it has been opened?
No. the 2 year shelf life is only until the can has not been opened.
